Practical Medical Ethics Course Agenda

Course Day 1

Morning session 1: 8:00 – 10:15 am

  • Complete Ethics Pre-test. Introduction to ethics;
  • Distinguishing ethics from law; Possible repercussions
    of unethical conduct.

Morning break: 10:15 – 10:30 am
Morning session 2: 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

  • Actions by peer review bodies for ethics violations;
  • Boundary violation behaviors; Boundary violation consequences; Boundary violation risk factors and triggers.

Afternoon session 1: 1:30 – 3:30 pm

  • Boundary violation prevention; Unprofessional
    comments to patients or their families; Improper
    disclosure of confidential patient information;
  • Attempting care beyond the level of competence;
  • Informal experimentation; Gatekeeper roles and
    managed care.

Afternoon break: 3:30 – 3:45 pm
Afternoon session 2: 3:45 – 5:00 pm

  • Excessive patient load; Properly terminating care
    of a patient; Supervision; Delegation of responsibilities
    and unlicensed practice. Ethics of collaborative
    treatment; Defensive medicine; Agreeing to
    inappropriate demands by patient or family.

Afternoon break 2: 5:00 – 5:15 pm
Afternoon session 3: 5:15 – 6:15 pm

  • One hour ethics discussion using hypothetical case
    situations. Complete Enduring Materials Post-test.

Adjourn: 6:15 pm

Course Day 2

Morning session 1: 8:00 – 10:15 am

  • Life-sustaining measures; Fraudulent misrepresentations
    to patients; Insurance fraud; Miscoding,
    over-billing and Medicare fraud; Making false
    documents.

Morning break: 10:15 – 10:30 am
Morning session 2: 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

  • Referral fees; Other forms of dishonesty;
    Pharmaceutical and device manufacturer interactions;
    Defamation; False advertising or misrepresenting
    professional qualifications.

Afternoon session 1: 1:30 – 3:30 pm

  • Solicitation of patients; Physical and mental
    impairment of the clinician; Temporary impairments;
    Substance use disorder in clinicians; Prescribing
    for self, family, or friends.

Afternoon break: 3:30 – 3:45 pm
Afternoon session 2: 3:45 – 5:00 pm

  • Reporting clinicians for substance use disorder;
    Improper prescribing or incompetence; Medical
    staff peer review abuse of authority; Disruptive
    clinicians in hospitals or group practices. Effects
    on clinicians and their practices due to substance
    use disorder; Identifying and minimizing clinician
    bias.

Afternoon break 2: 5:00 – 5:15 pm
Afternoon session 3: 5:15 – 6:15 pm

  • One hour ethics discussion using hypothetical case
    situations. Complete Ethics Post-test.
